PRINCIPLES GOVERNING PROFESSIONAL TRANSLATIONS
“IT IS THE TASK OF THE TRANSLATOR TO RELEASE IN HIS OWN LANGUAGE THAT PURE LANGUAGE, WHICH IS EXILED AMONG ALIEN TONGUES, TO LIBERATE THE LANGUAGE IMPRISONED IN A WORK IN HIS RE-CREATION OF THAT WORK.”
Walter Benjamin: ‘The Task of the Translator’
When it comes to good translation, there are numerous different ideals. Culturebites believes that a translator should translate solely into their mother tongue and must have a thorough, professional knowledge of the type of text in question. Culturebites always aims to provide readers with the experience and the tone of language they would experience if they were reading the original text. Our goal is for a native speaker to be able to read a translated text without getting puzzled or stopping along the way. A text must never sound like a translation. Consequently we prefer easy, unaffected translation, which reflects the source accurately, but without being a word-for-word reproduction.
Linguistic revision takes into account:
(1) The precision or beauty that lies in the proper choice of words, guided by the four virtues of eloquence: linguistic correctness, clarity, ornament and appropriateness.
(2) The rhythm of the text.
When it comes to professional translation into English, we always translate into UK English, and only to US English if a client requires it.
All translations are completed in consultation with a native-speaking proofreader.
